This all started shortly before I was laid off from my job in September, 2024. I had a feeling I would be next on the chopping block and started getting my financial ducks in order. I had recently started listening to Financial Independence podcasts (specifically ChooseFI) and was able to take a look at my long-term financial picture with different eyes.
I discovered that if I sold my house and car to get my expenses down to the bare minimum and started traveling in a frugal way to countries with lower costs of living, I could retire when the layoffs came (hence SurpriseFI). Come they did so I sold my house and car, left my beloved friends behind and started traveling full time.
As I was researching the potential of retiring early I was surprised and disappointed how very little advice and knowledge was out there for single and childfree/childless people existed. All retirement advice seemed to revolve around having money to pass on to future generations and that just wasn’t a concern I had. I hope that I can help increase knowledge in this space as well as provide a running proof of life to those who care about me.
